Indian Consulate came forward regarding Canada temple case, assured of support
Incidents of theft and vandalism of idols and ornaments have been reported at several Hindu temples in Canada's Greater Toronto Area in recent days. In such a situation, the people of the Hindu community of Canada are worried. Reports suggest that burglary has been witnessed in six Hindu temples. In many cases cash and ornaments of deities have been stolen from donation boxes.
The Toronto-based Indian Consulate has spoken to the temple
trustees regarding the matter and has assured support to take up the matter
with the Canadian authorities to nab the culprits. Prima facie these cases do
not look like organized attacks against Hindu temples and their properties and
are being seen as mere stealing of money from temples.
The first such incident was reported in November 2021 when
the Hindu Sabha Temple and Shri Jagannath Temple in Brampton were reported
vandalized. Similar incidents have been reported from other temples including
Chintpurni Temple- Brampton, Hindu Heritage Center- Mississauga, Gauri Shankar
Temple- Brampton and Hamilton Samaj Temple-Hamilton in January 2022.
The local police has started investigation into the matter.
Officials have contacted temple staff and increased security and police
patrolling.
